All- As many of you know we are installing two Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR) in two of our patrol cars. The installation is being done now and additional software will be added in dispatch in the new few weeks, so we’re still weeks away from going live.

As you can imagine anytime data is randomly collected it can raise legitimate concerns in respect to people’s privacy and civil liberties. I suspect we will receive questions and I wanted to pass on some information that will help answer them.

Information will only be gathered within public view and will not be used for the sole purpose of monitoring individual activities protected by the First Amendment. ALPR data is stored in a secured law enforcement facility with multiple layers of physical and electronic security. ALPR data is only shared for legitimate law enforcement reasons to agencies with a right and reason to know. As a rule of thumb, ALPR data is not shared with federal agencies unless specific criteria through a strict vetting process is met. ALPR data is not released to anyone or any entity for the sole purpose of immigration enforcement.

Having said that, ALPRs will be great tool for our community and assist us in locating stolen vehicles, wanted people and locating missing children and elderly including those associated with Amber and Silver Alerts.

We will be putting messaging on Facebook informing the community of the ALPRs. We’ll also be sending out more information on the training, policy and operating ALPRs to everyone as we get closer.

Please let any of the admin staff know if you have questions. And feel free to refer anyone with questions to us.

Thanks,

Mike
